his time we want to share with you information regarding the must commonly used treatments to reduce expression lines. Probably many of you have heard or know about these procedures but, nonetheless, we have received questions asking for details.
Dr. Carlos Cohen discusses:
Commonly used treatments for Wrinkles and Frown Lines
Botulinum toxin(Botox®):
Botulinum toxin is a purified substance (toxin) derived from the bacteria clostridium botulinicum. It blocks neuromuscular transmission and therefore temporarily weakens the muscles involved in expression lines. As the muscles weaken, they can not contract and lines smoothen. The most commonly treated areas are the forehead and "crows feet" areas; other areas on the face and neck can be treated as well. It has been used since 1987 as a cosmetic agent. For optimal results, botulinum toxin can be safely combined with other cosmetic procedures such as chemical peels and dermal fillers.
The treatment requires the use of a tiny needle that delivers a small amount of the toxin to the superficial facial muscles. There is no down time. The effects are noticeable as early as 3 days after the injections. Botulinum toxin can also be used successfully to treat unwanted underarm sweating. The side effects of botulinum toxin are minimal, self-limited and fully reversible (bruising, headache and temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelid). The desired effects may last up to 6 months.
Soft Tissue Fillers:
These are substances that can be injected directly into the skin to plump up and correct lines, give volume to lips, and hollow cheeks, and elevate deep folds.
Several substances have been developed since bovine collagen was introduced 25 years ago. Most of the newer fillers in the market are much safer and require no allergy testing; among the most commonly used substances are hialuronic acid (Restylane®, Perlane®), calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®), poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra®) and human derived collagen (Cosmoderm®, Cosmoplast®). Other substances are autologous fat, polymer-based implants, etc.
Injections are given by the doctor in the office. Topical or injected anesthetic may be necessary. The procedure will cause mild discomfort. It is usually very well tolerated. After the procedure, there may be some temporary swelling, bruising or redness. Make up can be applied after the procedure. Depending on the chosen agent, the results will last between 6-12 months.
